and philanthropist who served as president of South Africa in the
period from 1994 to 1999. He was the black president who led the
executive branch, and also the first to be elected by universal
suffrage in their country. His government set about dismantling the
social structure and political legacy of apartheid through
combat
institutionalized racism, poverty and social inequality, and
promoting social reconciliation
